A 2020 Perspective on the 1918 Flu

Join us to look back on the 1918 flu in 2020. Professor Hilary Iris Lowe, Abigail Gruber, and Charlie Hersh will discuss their research and work on the history of the 1918 flu in Philadelphia. This work came out of a class Professor Lowe held in fall 2017, but is especially relevant today. 

About the speakers:
Charlie Hersh received both their MA in Public History and BA in Religion from Temple University. Their master's thesis was titled "Sourcing Liberty: Using Artifacts to Teach about Religious Freedom." Hersh has worked in a variety of Philadelphia's museums including the National Museum of American Jewish History, the African American Museum in Philadelphia, and Carpenters' Hall. 

Abby Gruber is currently in the History PhD program at Temple University, where she focuses in Early America, Gender, the Atlantic World, and Public History. She received both her MA in History and BSEd in Secondary Social Studies Education from Millersville University near Lancaster, PA. During her time at Temple, Gruber served as the Allen Davis Fellow in Public History. Her fellowship allowed her to work on various projects, including the 1918 Spanish Flu project and the "Inequality in Bronze" Dinah Memorial Project at Stenton.

Hilary Iris Lowe is an associate professor in the History Department and has been at Temple since 2012. She teaches courses in U.S. cultural history, public history, and American studies. As public historian and teacher, she endeavors to engage students with the research projects to which she contributes.
