Beyond the Notes: Folio + Phantasma

Beyond the Notes: Folio + Phantasma

Join Relâche Ensemble and student dancers from the Boyer College of Music and Dance for an exploration and celebration of music, dance, and wellness. In recognition of Epilepsy Awareness Month, Beyond the Notes presents Cynthia Folio's powerful When the Spirit Catches You, a work exploring life from the perspective of one who suffers from seizures. Commissioned by Relâche, Folio’s multimedia work combines music, visual effects and spoken word to tell the story of her daughter’s lifelong experience with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex and her journey through the stages of frequent seizures, the technology involved in discovery and treatment, and the mindset of one who lives to wait for the next episode. This landmark composition is one of those rare artistic creations that offers a real glimpse into the human condition—more specifically, into the experience of one who suffers from seizures, and the existence that surrounds it.

The theme of music, art, and healing continues with two jazz-themed originals performed by the Phantasma Trio, made up of performers from Relâche Ensemble, in collaboration with student dancers expressing health and healing through dance improvisations.

Recognized for its world-class performances of works by leading contemporary composers, Relâche is an international leader in commissioning, presenting and performing the innovative music of our time. Founded as a composer's collective in 1977 and officially founded as an ensemble in 1979, Relâche is among the oldest continuously operating nonprofit chamber ensembles dedicated to contemporary music in the United States.
