Veteran's Day Celebration | Author Talk with Joseph H. Geeter III

This month Oxford University Press releases a graphic novel, co-authored by Joe titled “The First Black Marines, An Oral History”.

A native of Chicago, Illinois, Joseph (Joe) Geeter enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1976 and served 25 years on active duty, retiring as a Master Gunnery Sergeant.

Joe has been involved in Veterans Affairs for well over 40 years, specifically with the Montford Point Marines, America’s first African American Marines. Joe rose through the ranks of the National Montford Point Marine Association Inc., eventually serving as the 16th National President from 2005-2009. He was instrumental in lobbying the US Congress for the Congressional Gold Medal for these pioneering Marines, which was signed into law by then President Barrack Obama in November 2011.

Joe currently commands the Philadelphia, Chapter #1 of the National Montford Point Marine Association and has appeared at scores of events in the Philadelphia area educating the masses of this incredible history.

Joe’s life work for veterans was featured in an official Marine Corps Sponsored video in 2015. Joe was also featured in an ABC Owned Television Stations short video depicting his work with the Montford Point Marines.

Joe is an alumnus of the History Makers and his oral biographical life story is now in the Library of Congress. Joe received his bachelor's degree in management from Park University in 1999 and served as a Trustee of his Alma Mater. Joe currently resides in Limerick, PA.
