Beyond the Notes: He's Got the Whole World: A Celebration of Black Voices

William Grant Still (1895–1978), Harrison Leslie Adams (1932–2024), Robert Owens (1925–2017), Harry T. Burleigh (1866–1949), Moses Hogan (1957–2003), and Edward Boatner (1898–1981) were trailblazing Black composers whose groundbreaking contributions to classical music often go uncelebrated. Dubbed the "Dean of African American composers," Still masterfully fused classical and African American musical traditions, creating timeless works. Adams, too, in his choral music, art songs, and instrumental compositions, embraced the western classical tradition with an African American perspective. Owens crafted a unique voice in symphonic music, while Burleigh’s arrangements of spirituals redefined the genre. Hogan's compositions captured the soul of the African American experience, and Boatner’s innovative works spanned sacred and secular realms. These men reshaped vocal music, leaving a legacy of resilience, creativity, and profound cultural impact.
