Make Your First Map with QGIS: Free, Open-Source Desktop GIS

QGIS is a full desktop GIS that costs nothing and runs on Mac, Windows, and Linux. It does everything the expensive packages do, and it is the tool you can still use after you graduate or leave your institution.

In this session, you will load spatial data, understand what a coordinate reference system is and why your layers sometimes refuse to line up, join a spreadsheet of your own numbers to a map of neighborhoods, style the result so it communicates rather than decorates, and lay out a finished map for export. We will work with Philadelphia data throughout, but everything transfers to your own study area.

No prior GIS experience required. This is the foundation session for the rest of the semester's mapping series.

This workshop will be offered as an online session via Zoom. You must register for this workshop to receive the Zoom link via a confirmation email. On the day of the workshop, use the link to join the session.
