Navigating The Odyssey: Gender, Legacy, and Interpretation

Join us for a lively panel discussion on Homer’s The Odyssey, exploring one of the world’s most enduring stories of adventure, homecoming, identity, and imagination.

Three Temple faculty speakers will offer distinct perspectives on the epic poem:

  • Dan Berman, Professor of Religion and Ancient Mediterranean Studies, will provide a general overview of The Odyssey, its story, characters, and lasting significance.
  • Karen Hersch, Associate Professor and Department Chair of Religion and Ancient Mediterranean Studies, will discuss gender in The Odyssey.
  • Marian Makins, Assistant Professor of Religion and Ancient Mediterranean Studies, will examine the poem’s reception—how The Odyssey has been interpreted, adapted, and reshaped over time.

The discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A. Attendees can also pick up an Odyssey-themed magnet created in the Charles Library Makerspace, while supplies last.
