We Remember and We Recall: In Conversation with Representative Malcolm Kenyatta

Join us for a conversation with Representative Malcolm Kenyatta, who will participate in the Blockson Collection’s oral history project: “We Remember and We Recall: North Philadelphia Oral History Project.”

Representative Malcolm Kenyatta currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Philadelphia Delegation, as a member of the Governor’s Task Force on Suicide Prevention, on a host of committee leadership positions, and is running for US Senate. He received a BA from Temple University, an MS from Drexel University, and completed the Harvard Kennedy School’s Executives in State and Local Government program. As the first openly LGBTQ+ person of color and one of the youngest members elected to the PA General Assembly, he is deeply committed to creating an equitable and inclusive society.

Malcolm was involved in fighting for his neighbors from a young age—as a community activist and junior block captain, a former board member of Smith Playground, and a leader of the Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives at the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. Malcolm lives in the same neighborhood he grew up in North Philadelphia with his partner, Dr. Matthew Miller.

About the project: 

It is important that an accurate record of life in North Philadelphia is documented and preserved. The “We Remember and We Recall: North Philadelphia Oral History Project” is designed to capture primary sources and gives voice to current and former residents of North Philadelphia as they tell the history of the community as they have experienced it, and continue to live it. The creation of first-person accounts with current and former residents will ensure that students, researchers, scholars, and the community have access to knowledge about North Philadelphia that reflects the essence as well as the rich history and culture of community life.
