Douglass Day Transcribe-a-thon

Douglass Day Transcribe-a-thon

On Valentine’s Day 2023, you are invited to a transcribe-a-thon in honor of Frederick Douglass' birthday. Although Douglass was born into bondage, and never knew his birthdate, he chose to celebrate every year on February 14th. We celebrate this day as a moment for preserving Black history together.

Join us this year at Temple University’s Charles Library as we celebrate Douglass Day by inviting participants to transcribe the papers of the prominent African-American scholar, Mary Ann Shadd Cary, one of the earliest Black women to edit a newspaper, serve as a Civil War recruiter, attend law school, and so much more. Transcriptions will be completed using Zooniverse.

What is a Transcribe-a-thon?

A transcribe-a-thon is an event in which people gather in person or online to work simultaneously on a crowdsourced transcription project. Transcribing papers makes them searchable and easier navigate, increasing their reach. No previous experience is required. Training, good company, and cake and treats from Tyisha's Sweets will be provided!
