Intro to Video Analysis: Analyzing Representation on Screen

For anyone interested in learning how to analyze media representation on screen, this workshop will introduce three video analysis tools for examining visual portrayals of identity and diversity in film and television: ELAN, Cinemetrics, and Distant Viewing Lab. Through demonstrations and guided activities, attendees will have the opportunity to explore both qualitative and quantitative approaches to video analysis, practice annotating and coding clips, and analyze patterns in visual components including shot length, screen time, and character presence. In addition to video analysis tools, this workshop will also introduce resources for studying diversity and representation, such as the Geena Davis Institute, the GLAAD Media Institute, and the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. No prior experience with video analysis tools is required. Attendees are encouraged to bring a laptop to participate in the activities.
